Living on the moon
In December 1972, Gene Cernan was the last man on the Moon. Nearly 50 years later, SAGA - a Danish design studio, is looking at making space liveable for future travellers. After designing and building the innovative LUNARK Habitat, SAGA co-founders Sebastian Aristotelis and Karl-Johan Sørensen tested its viability in Arctic Greenland. This bare location was selected due to its similarities with the Moon.
The LUNARK Habitat
Extreme cold was a major challenge and SAGA turned to Armacell for support with insulation. The insulation had to cope with temperatures below -30 °C and winds up to 90 km/h. The origami-inspired structure of the LUNARK Habitat was made of ArmaPET and two layers of ArmaFlex Ultima protected by ArmaFinish. With its excellent fire performance and low smoke density, ArmaFlex was the only insulation material capable of meeting SAGA's design requirements and Greenland's shelter regulations. This unique design not only kept the two-men crew warm in the Artic conditions, the origami-inspired lightweight structure was also foldable to enable transportability to Greenland, and later to the Moon.
