The human ear has a dynamic range of 0 dB to 120 - 130 dB. A whisper is approximately 40 dB while normal voice is about 60 dB. Continuous exposure to sounds above 85 dB damages the inner ear (cochlear) and can result in permanent hearing loss.
According to the World Health Organisation, over 400 million people, including 34 million children live with disabling hearing loss. Disabling hearing loss refers to hearing loss greater than 35 dB in the better ear. A study in 2005 shows that 16% of disabling hearing loss in adults can be attributed to occupational noise.
